I have a love-hate relationship with Linux. My first distro was Linux Mandrake. Mandrake's sales pitch was Linux for Windows Users. Now, this was at a time when my IT knowledge was pretty basic, so I didn't have a good time. I specifically remember obsessing over my SiS onboard GPU and X Server and the lack of 3D rendering. Which wouldn't have made a difference, as I had a potato for a computer. Obviously my profession forced me to become more entwined with Linux than I wanted to, and I still never warmed up to it.
You see, when Linux works, it's great. Terminal makes working in Linux awesome. I can't begin to tell you how cool it is to be able to just type in a few commands to get stuff done. What isn't when you have to work with Vi and config files. So much of the power of Linux is in the conf files, that if you're a GUI baby, then it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Yet being able to run Linux on SoC means that I can have a low-cost server with decent functionality. In fact I have a few as FTP, Web and Media Servers. Plus most of the basic software needed is free which means no searching the internet for pirated free software.
So then why I am still on a Windows OS? Habit I guess. PC Gaming is also a thing too. All work and no play makes me a frustrated guy.
